Lexa Rosean is one of the best - a small, elite coterie - DJs in New York City, My partner and I prowl the afternoon and night milongas seeking inspiration for our dance. Often finding nonstop rhythmic marching music, we leave disappointed. Lexa never disappoints. Not only does she offer the broadest range of Argentine tango music, she is present with the dancers in the best sense. She constantly takes the pulse the room monitoring energy, tone, temp and raising and lowering it with her selections, as appropriate. She draws from a vast library, assembled over many years, plays exciting combinations, gorgeous old romantic orchestras and some contemporary pieces that are challenging for the dance. We are always thrilled to see her hame as the DJ, and will follow her wherever she plays. We know if Lexa is the DJ, our dance will touch the stars.

it's been awhile since I posted here. I've been busy with otra cosas. I wanted to thank everyone who has supported my milongas and classes through the years. I'm taking a break this year from organizing, hosting, and teaching group lessons. I'll still be dj'ing here and there and will continue to teach my private students. After 16 1/2 years, I really needed to step back and come back around to tango for pleasure - not for work. I'll see you on the dancefloor.

Burleigh and Joanne play the early tango for dancers. Early compositions from Villoldo,Greco, Arolas and others are the center of our repertoire. Our emphasis is on getting the sound of the small bands from the turn of the century.

Luna Palacios was born in Buenos Aires. The greatest inspiration for her was her teacher and friend, the late Carlos Gavito. Shortly after they met, Carlos became Luna's artistic mentor. She became the favourite dancing partner of several great dancers such as: Oliver Kolker, “El Flaco” Dany Garcia, Horacio Britos (aka: PIbe Avellaneda), y Carlos Copello.
She had travelled extensively to teach and perfom in Argentina and overseas. Luna has also performed in every single important venue in Buenos Aires: Club Sunderland, Salon Canning, La Viruta, La Baldosa, Glorias Argentinas, El Arranque, Porteno y Bailarin among others.
Nowadays, she travels back and forth from Argentina to perform and teach in different places around the world. Her intuitive style of teaching opens the door of enjoyment to everyone that is interested in this popular dance.
Luna’s ultimate goal is to make contagious to everyone, her love and understanding of her greatest passion: Tango Argentino.

Diego Mohammad was born in Villa Urquiza, Buenos Aires to a family of tango dancers. Diego Mohammad has had great successes in competitions such as 2nd place in the Metropolitano de Tango Salon - Buenos Aires 2008, Finalist in the Mundial de Tango - Buenos Aires 2008 and 2009, 1st place in the "Most elegant couple" category in the Mundial de Tango - Buenos Aires 2009 . Diego has taught along side teachers such as Gabriel Misse with whom he co created "La Practica a La Antigua" in Buenos Aires and for five years Diego has assisted Carlos and Rosa Perez, well known and respected teachers of the Sunderland Club milonga.

Come and learn this beautiful Argentine folkloric dance from an expert. You'll never have to sit out the chacarera again. And if you've already had some lessons - come and brush up your chacarera with this special class taught by Genoveva Baez.

Genoveva started dancing folklore at age of 10 and by the age of 15 she was already part of a traveling dancing group. She participated many times in tv shows as well as in the international Fiesta de la Vendimia in Mendoza Argentina. She taught folklore in different private schools in Argentina.

The class will be one hour (8:30-9:30pm) and in between the tangos, valses, y milongas, we will dance many chacareras
At 11pm Genoveva and her partner ARMANDO MILLAN will perform chacarera y samba for us.

Eva Carrozza began dancing tango after seeing street performers improvising in the Ramblas of Barcelona in '92 (when the city was preparing for the Olympic games and street performances abounded!) Fascinated by the connection evident in this dance -- she took her first classes with Danel & Maria Bastone, pioneers of social tango in New York City. Since then, she has studied with Guillermina Quiroga, Facundo Posadas, Julio Balmaceda & Corina de la Rosa, Graciela Gonzalez, Pablo Veron, and many other great teachers during travels to Buenos Aires and tango congresses around the United States. A brief, but illuminating partnership with dancer and author Ramiro Gigliotti (El Veneno de Tango, 2009) from 2002-2004 brought the influence of Villa Urquiza style of dancing tango to Eva's dancing. Over the years she has performed with Ney Melo, Murat Erdemsel, Eduardo Goytia, and Ramiro Gigliotti. Teaching, she emphasizes refining the connection through improving posture, flexibility and security in the embrace, and going deeper into the music to bring the partnership to a richer experience of tango. Eva Carrozza began her dance career as a modern dancer. Eva's immersion into social dancing began in 1993. She loves teaching and performing. She is a senior teaching artist with the American Ballroom Theater's Dancing Classrooms. A program founded by Pierre Dulaine & Yvonne Marceau. This program was featured in the documentary Mad Hot Ballroom and the film, Take the Lead.

In recent years, she has toured with the big band revue: Forever Swing. She performed tango with the New York City Ballet program Ballet for Young People at New York State Theatre and appeared in the Wendy Taucher production Carly Simon Dances with original and previously recorded compositions by Carly Simon. If you watch channel 13 in NYC, you will probably see Eva dancing tango on the station identifications.

I must announce that I bought a pair of comme il faut tango shoes from Chino.
I could not resist.
They are so damn hot.
I have no idea when I will wear them.
I took my Dance Partner to buy some shoes and my inner tanguera just came raging out and I couldn't leave until I bought her a pair of shoes.
I haven't followed much for years but lately, more guys ask me to dance and I usually follow them in my Fabio tango sneakers. They are great as I can lead and follow in them.
I had a pair of character shoes with a heel when I first started dancing. I loaned them to a student for a competition and never got them back. So I guess it's important to me to have a pair of heels lurking around.
Atención! as one of these days my comme il fauts will make their debut...

Milonga del Cielo has some wonderful Tuesdays in store for you this month.

Tuesday Feb 9
8:30PM SPECIAL CHACARERA CLASS
Come and learn this beautiful Argentine folkloric dance from an expert. You'll never have to sit out the chacarera again. And if you've already had some lessons - come and brush up your chacarera with this special class taught by Genoveva Baez. Genoveva started dancing folklore at age of 10 and by the age of 15 she was already part of a traveling dancing group.
Participated many times in tv shows as well as in the international fiesta de la Vendimia in Mendoza Argentina.
She taught folklore in different private schools in Argentina.
The class will be one hour and inbetween the tangos, valses, y milongas, we will dance many chacareras (and Genoveva will dance a samba for us too).

One Year Anniversary of Cielo Milonga
Special class (all levels) with Helen La Vikinga.
Helen "La Vikinga" has been teaching tango since 1992 in Sweden, and since 2005 in Buenos Aires. Helen works with the Argentinian tango as a dance, as an expression, but most of all as a communication and as a connection to the other, both in the leader and in the follower role. Helen teaches from traditional tango to "queer" tango and everything in between. The most important is to be able to communicate to the other and enjoy the TANGO!

She started early to dance both roles in the tango and became well known as La Vikinga at the traditional milongas in Buenos Aires for dancing the 'man´s" role. Helen has been organizing in Sweden, the milonga Libertango and in Buenos Aires the milongas La Vikinga (one of the first alternative milongas in Bs As), Italia Unita, Bien Pulenta and Mano a Mano (open minded traditional milonga). In her own tango school, Escuela La Vikinga, she teaches both group and private tango & milonga lessons alone or with Javier Guiraldi.

Beside dancing and organizing tango Helen designs and produces La Vikinga Shoes and Sneakers.

10./11. October Workshops with Lexa Rosean (NYC)

Lexa Roséan is the 2008 US Argentine Stage Tango Champion (along with partner Gayle Madeira). Lexa also placed 3rd in Salon Tango for 3 consecutive years and was the first woman to receive an official invitation from the Argentine Government to dance the lead in the Mundial (World Competition).

Lexa began learning tango in 1995 and her first teacher was Brigitta Winkler. She continued studying with many of the great Argentine maestro/as including Omar Vega, Carlos Gavito, Nito y Elba, Susanna Miller, and Alicia Cruzado.

Lexa taught at DanceSport, and now teaches privately, as well as djs, and performs - but her most favorite aspect of Argentine tango is to dance socially. In 2007/8 she hosted NYC's only gay/lesbian milonga at Rubyfruit Bar in the West Village. Her current Milonga del Cielo is open to ALL tango lovers regardless of their sexual preference.

Lexa Roséan gewann 2008 zusammen mit ihrer Partnerin Gayle Madeira die US Meisterschaft im Tango Argentino-Showtanz. Inauguration Tango happened in New York City at the Cielo Milonga on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. Bill and Hillary Clinton (a.k.a. Lexa Roséan and Gayle Madeira) made a special appearance along with various Monica Lewinsky's. After a bit of a fray between Hillary and one Monica, Hill pulls herself together in time for President Barack Obama to appear and dance with her.

Some details that can't be seen are that Gayle has a greatly embellished dress (the boobs and butt were really big) and Lexa has a mustache. When Lexa sits down towards the end, she is reading a book called "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" (with title also in español). Lexa also has a flask, the book and a cigar on the table and is drinking...a lot!

　　第一次见到蕾克丝，是在纽约每月一次的盛大探戈舞会上。那时候我还是个探戈新生，平常练习都颠颠簸簸，到了正式舞会更是全身僵硬，直冒冷汗。那晚完全是因为看到海报上说舞会里有占星师算命，为了满足好奇心才前往的。

　　我买了门票进场后就四处寻找那位占星师，好像跳舞根本不是主题。围着舞池边缘绕了一圈，才发现一块神秘的“地盘”。小圆桌上摆有一台笔记本电脑，旁边有个牌子写着“塔罗占卜”。

　　连塔罗都改电脑了？真是连巫师都不落伍。小圆桌旁坐着一位女士，我在她面前走来走去，犹豫半天，和自己斗争了很久，才上前小声地说：“请问这塔罗算命是免费的吗？”我以为，这是包括在门票里的额外服务。

　　“不，是要钱的。”蕾克丝回答。我突然觉得很不好意思，说声：“谢谢”就赶紧跑开了。

　　那天蕾克丝的衣着很普通，没有特地为跳舞做精致高雅的打扮，我完全不知道她是个杰出的舞者。而且她戴眼镜的样子很严肃，令我问过那个困窘的问题之后便紧张地离开了，不敢再和她说话。

　　记不起那天晚上究竟有没有跳舞，倒是这一窘事记忆犹新。

　　一晃就是两年，我开始穿梭于纽约大小探戈舞会，成了舞迷们说的，擅长夜间活动的“吸血鬼”。偶然瞥见蕾克丝，差点认不出来。我惊叹着哪里来的潇洒女子，领舞领得这般好。

　　蕾克丝如果是以舞者而不是占星师的身份参加舞会，定会西装笔挺，整整齐齐，从手帕领带到鞋，每个细节都不马虎。我从来不主动和她说话，也从来没有人介绍我们认识。于是，我遥望她遥望了两年，没想到过了两年半，我和蕾克丝成为了朋友。

　　前段日子，我和S君去观看纽约主办的第二届美国探戈大赛。蕾克丝一箭双雕，拿下社交组第三和表演组冠军。爱拍照的S君在颁奖后抢着和蕾克丝合影，顺便递给她餐馆的名片。不久后，蕾克丝就在S君的餐馆里办起舞会来，由她教授入门课，给大家讲解舞蹈音乐。

　　开幕那天，中秋节刚过两天，大家“马后炮”似的一起吃月饼。两个礼拜后是犹太新年第二天，大家又“马后炮”似的一起吃蜂蜜苹果片（犹太人的传统，象征“甜甜的一年”）。因为这种特别的气氛，使蕾克丝的舞会总是和别的地方不同。

　　蕾克丝是个千面女郎，只见她一次是很难看出她的多样性的。第一次接触她时，觉得她很冷酷，有点高傲，甚至令人有些害怕。后来在一些细节中，逐渐认识到她体贴的一面，了解到原来她懂得为别人着想。开幕那晚，她因为怕领舞的人不够，有些女孩会干坐一晚没人请，特地邀几个男生来帮忙。曾经有人怂恿蕾克丝把奖杯带到舞会宣传一下，她没有这样做，因为有个帮忙陪舞的朋友连续两年和蕾克丝参加同一个比赛，却连连没有入围，蕾克丝不想让他心里难受。

　　蕾克丝既有阴柔之美，又有阳钢之俊，容貌无论如何打扮都潇洒，而且满腹文章，知识丰富，气质独特，真所谓“秀外慧中”。

　　逐渐认识蕾克丝后，才把她的精彩生活统统挖掘出来。除了做舞迷和探戈老师之外，她还是塔罗专家、作家、诗人和演员。

　　蕾克丝的第一份工作是个蛇舞女郎，外号“蛇女诗人”（SnakePoet）。美国知名艺术家安迪·沃荷（Andy Warhol, 1928-1987）在这个时期曾为蕾克丝摄影。蕾克丝曾经在中央公园，吊在Delacort剧院对面的一棵树上朗读爱伦坡、莎士比亚、劳伦斯、柯尔律治，以及她自己的诗。1982年，纽约警察用枪口对着这位女诗人和她13英尺的宠物蟒蛇“莉莉”，把她们逐出公园，迫使蕾克丝不得不在后来的几年间找一份“实在的”工作。

　　蕾克丝开始学习魔术和超自然艺术。这些年间，她传授占星术、塔罗占卜、犹太教的卡巴拉等等，并且自己做占星师。她的著作有《超市女魔法师》（The Supermarket Sorceress）、《超市女巫的迷人夜晚》（The Supermarket Sorceress's Enchanted Evenings）、《魔术烹调原料大全》（The Encyclopedia of Magickal Ingredients）等等。她还为若干杂志写星座专栏。

　　蕾克丝写的几部话剧，包括《囚徒》（The Prisoner）、《游泳》（The Swim）等等，都曾在WOW咖啡屋上演。蕾克丝也在La Mama剧场、Dixon Place、PS122等地方演出她自己的作品。

　　蕾克丝的才华多得让人数不清，除了探戈，她还曾经学过爵士舞、芭蕾舞、踢踏舞。去年，她是第一位正式应邀参加布宜诺斯艾利斯Mundial探戈比赛的女性领舞者。

　　蕾克丝年长我许多，她年轻的时候，女性地位不高，挣扎了很久才获得今天较为稳定的生活。其实占卜只是类似心理辅导的工作，近来美国经济不景气，她笑说，她的生意倒是好了，大家都来找她。

　　蕾克丝从来不叫好朋友让她占卜，我们见面总是聊天跳舞，把工作抛在脑后。原来所谓女巫师，也只是比较有趣的凡人。现在早已没有烧女巫的做法和对巫术迷信的态度了。蕾克丝只是比别人有更细致的感受力和坚强的信念。这是艺术家需要的品质，难怪她拥有那么优美的舞姿。

RUBYFRUIT, the beloved West Village lesbian bar and restaurant, is closing after 15 years - a victim of rising rents and smaller crowds. "It was the first of its kind as a meeting place for local lesbians and those visiting New York from all over the world," owner Debra Fierro told Page Six. "But there have been great strides, and I think lesbians are comfortable anywhere now." The bar, named after Rita Mae Brown's best seller "Rubyfruit Jungle," was written about in Patricia Cornwell's thrillers and hosted Martina Navratilova's retirement party. It once employed as a bartender Tammy Lynn Michaels, who later "wed" Melissa Etheridge. Straights like Liza Minnelli and Ashford and Simpson also dropped in. Fierro is talking with Socialista owner Armin Amiri and others about taking over the space. But her last few weeks at Rubyfruit have her "totally heartbroken. I love this place. When I told some of the women at the bar the other night, they were crying."

The Route:
The Parade will kick off at 1pm at 28th and Broadway. Then we will boogie our way down Broadway, hula, swing and irish step our way past Union Square and into University Place. At Eighth Street we will Salsa, Tango and Waltz East into Saint Marks Street. Our House, Techno and Disco floats will have afternoon shoppers wigglin as they watch us get down in the heart of the East Village. A straight shot from there brings us to DanceFest in Tompkins Square Park.

At DanceFest we will come together and celebrate watching free dance performances, be able to take free dance lessons and enjoy a Dance Party.

The practica y milonga are growing slowly and I am happy to report that tonight was a very good night at Rubyfruit. We had many new beginners including some very hot eye candy from Albert Einstein school of medicine. The doctorboys are on their way to Buenos Aires and wanted to get a head start on their tango. La Marshall - look out! We were also blessed with a visit from two Cubano Mambo Kings who are now ready to master the tango. There were gay boys from Uruguay y an amazing mina from Netherlands who stopped by to dance. (Be sure to look for her in the milongas on Wed & Th as her following is exquisite!) Along with the core group of dedicated regulars we were visited by a very sexy and mysterious man and woman couple. They experienced their first tango lesson and say they will be back. It was a very satisfying tango night. We danced until 1:30am and would have gone later except the bartender was tired and needed to call it a night. Nos vemos la proxima vez!

Dancing and Depressed.

Tonight the Egyptian asked me if I was tired.
"No I am not tired. "I said even though I was resting out the tanda.
"Then perhaps you are in love. It is the same, you know - tired and in love.
Being in love makes you dizzy." he smiled.
"Yes, I know" I smiled back.
I was feeling dizzy.
I had gotten a bit drunk before the milonga (something I never do) because I lost a job earlier in the afternoon and it seemed appropriate to get inebriated. If I had been tired or in love, these feelings were quickly supplanted by the onset of deep panic.
A long long time ago, my astrologer told me that I needed to dance in order to avoid committing suicide. So I began to dance.
It saved my life for several decades.
I am now wondering if this is still an effective remedy.

It was only in the elevator on the way out that I found my lost sense of humor, dignity, and desire to live.
A gentleman and two ladies accompanied me down. The ladies buzzed about my dapper hat and I made some comment back to them. The gentleman was taken aback and he said:
"Your voice is higher than I expected. I thought you were a -"
"The ladies buzzed again and chuckled deeply.
"Shall I lower my voice for you?" I asked while straightening my corbata. And I did so speaking in a deep husky range.
"I thought you were a -
You are dressed like a -
I thought you were a -" he repeated.
"I AM" I said in my best basso.
"It is ok, the ladies assured him. It takes a woman to know these things."
In that moment I ceased to feel so depressed for being such a loser.
At least I was recognized for the milonguero I am.
